Opus Clip

Cut long videos into vertical shorts with AI clip detection, reframing and captions

popular

OpusClip takes a long video (podcast, interview, stream, vlog, sports or gaming footage) and returns ranked short clips with captions, vertical reframing and a predicted Virality Score. As of October 2026 it also exposes a hosted MCP server and REST API, so clipping can be driven from an AI assistant or a script. Paid plans are Starter at $15/mo and Pro at $29/mo.

Why it stands out

What makes Opus Clip different

  1. 01

ClipAnything works on any genre (vlogs, gaming, sports, interviews, explainers), not just podcasts, and accepts a plain-language prompt to pull a specific moment.

  2. 02

Hosted MCP server at mcp.opus.pro/mcp with OAuth sign-in: an AI assistant can submit a video, list ranked clips, apply edit scripts, export and schedule without a separate API key.

  3. 03

Virality Score ranks clips per video, so you review the likely winners first rather than scrubbing the whole episode.

  4. 04

Word-level transcript and frame-level editing scripts let you fix trims and captions without re-rendering from scratch.

  5. 05

Export to Adobe Premiere XML (Pro) hands the AI cuts to a traditional NLE for finishing, which most clip tools do not offer.

The Feature

About Opus Clip

OpusClip's core job is repurposing: you give it a long-form video by upload or link, and its ClipAnything engine finds the moments most likely to work as standalone shorts. Each clip comes with a Virality Score, auto-generated captions that you can edit word by word, and ReframeAnything, which crops 16:9 footage to 9:16 or 1:1 and tracks moving subjects so they stay in frame. A Pro plan adds B-roll, transitions, AI sound effects, dubbing, bulk export and 4K export.

What changed in 2026 is mostly on the workflow side. Reprompt now works across uploaded videos, ClipAnything projects and Quick Clips projects, so you can re-cut a clip with a plain-language instruction instead of re-running the whole job. The source list expanded (Zoom Clips, Apple Podcasts, Medal.tv in May 2026), Duplicate Clips lets you branch one finished clip into an alternate version, and the iOS app can auto-post scheduled clips. A hosted MCP server (mcp.opus.pro) now lets Claude and other MCP clients submit projects, list ranked clips, edit by script, export and schedule posts.

The product is aimed at podcasters, creators and marketing teams who publish long-form video every week and need many short cuts from each episode. For a film or editorial workflow it is a first-pass cutter, not a finishing tool: its Premiere XML export is the bridge if you want to take its cuts into a proper NLE and refine them there.

Changelog

What's new in Opus Clip

  1. 4K export and Duplicate Clips for Pro

Zoom Clips, Apple Podcasts and Medal.tv were added as import sources alongside YouTube, Vimeo, Zoom and Google Drive.

The Verdict

When to reach for it — and when to skip

Reach for it when…

  • Fast first pass: a one-hour episode becomes a set of ranked, captioned vertical clips
  • Works on many genres, not only podcasts
  • Free plan is usable to test on real footage
  • MCP and API make it scriptable from an AI assistant
  • Premiere XML export lets you finish cuts in a real NLE

Skip it when…

  • Free plan watermarks animated caption templates and exports are capped at 1080p
  • Credits are consumed per imported minute, so long source footage burns the allowance quickly
  • Virality Score is a prediction from the model, not a measured performance number

Best For

✓ Ideal for

  • Turning a weekly podcast or interview episode into a batch of Shorts, Reels and TikToks
  • Pulling highlight reels from long gaming or sports streams
  • Producing vertical cutdowns of a 16:9 talk or documentary interview for social
  • Letting a Claude or other MCP assistant run the clip-and-schedule loop for a content team

✗ Not built for

  • Generating new footage or B-roll from scratch (it recuts existing video)
  • Finishing color, sound mix or editorial structure of a film or series
  • Client work that needs a documented commercial license without checking the terms first
Field Notes

Working Tips from Filmmakers Using Opus Clip

  1. 01 Trim the source to the usable section first, or use the processing-timeframe slider: credits are charged on the full imported minutes.
  2. 02 Use Reprompt to re-cut a clip with a specific instruction rather than regenerating the whole project.
  3. 03 Treat the Virality Score as a ranking aid. Check the hook in the first three seconds yourself before publishing.
  4. 04 Export Premiere XML from Pro when a clip needs a real color or audio pass.
