About Descript
Descript is built for voice-led video: interviews, podcasts, talking-head YouTube, webinars and course content. The core workflow is text-first. You clean up filler words and retakes, rearrange sections and fix mistakes by editing the transcript, and the video follows. A multitrack timeline is still there for layering B-roll, music and effects.
What changed in 2026: Underlord, the built-in AI co-editor, was rebuilt as v2 in January and has since gained a model picker (Claude, Gemini, GPT, Grok, with premium models on paid plans), chat history, @-context and automatic edit review. The Descript API entered open beta in April and an MCP connector went live for Claude and ChatGPT in June. Remote recording picked up the SquadCast integration (Season 5), with local 4K recording per guest. In September Descript added AI music and sound-effect generation, redesigned captions with 18 presets, and a Zapier connector.
It fits a film or video pipeline at the start and end of a project rather than as a full finishing suite. Rough cuts, dialogue cleanup, captions, translation dubs, short clips and transcripts come out fast. Colour grading, VFX and large multi-camera finishing still belong in Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve. Credits are metered, and Underlord charges for both its reasoning and each tool it runs, so costs vary between runs of the same prompt.
