About CapCut
CapCut began as a mobile editor for short-form social video and now sells a full AI production stack on top of it. The editor itself is still the core: a multi-track timeline, keyframes, auto-captions in 20+ languages, background removal, vocal isolation, speed ramping and a large template library. What changed in 2026 is the generation layer. Seedance 2.5 (ByteDance) is available on the PC and web apps for Pro and Ultra subscribers and is billed per second. Seedance 2.0 Mini offers a cheaper 480p option. Image generation runs on Seedream 5.0 Pro and Nano Banana Pro, and Gemini Omni is also listed among the models.
The agent layer arrived over the summer. Video Studio can build a video from a chat prompt, Director Mode (June 2026) stores recurring characters, scenes, props and visual style for AI short dramas, and Edit Pilot (September 2026) takes a plain-language instruction inside the multi-track editor and applies the trims and tools needed. Infinite Canvas lets creators sketch a story and test shots before moving the work into the timeline. A Skills system saves a finished look or workflow for reuse, which the company demoed with a colour-grading Skill used across a multi-episode AI series.
For filmmakers, CapCut suits fast turnarounds, social cuts, rough assemblies, reframing for vertical and square versions, captions and temp voice-over, and AI shot generation for short-form series. It is not a finishing tool: colour grading is basic, there is no third-party OFX plugin support, audio mixing is limited, and there is no official public API or MCP server.
