Why it stands out

What makes Ghost different

  1. 01

Open source under MIT: you can self-host the full platform for free, or move your site off Ghost(Pro) without losing the content model.

  2. 02

No revenue share on memberships: Ghost(Pro) paid plans charge 0% on member payments (Stripe fees still apply).

  3. 03

One product for site, CMS, newsletter and memberships: posts are published to the web and emailed from the same editor, with free and paid tiers built in.

  4. 04

Full Admin and Content REST APIs plus webhooks, so you can script publishing, member import and tier changes without a third-party connector.

  5. 05

Own your audience: member export is included on all plans, and you control domain, SEO, theme and member data.

The Feature

About Ghost

Ghost is a publishing system for writers, newsletter operators and small media businesses that want to own the audience and the revenue. A Ghost site is a public website, a blog-style CMS with a rich editor, an email newsletter sent from the same posts, and a membership layer with free and paid tiers, Stripe payments and member dashboards. It is the main open-source alternative to Substack, which runs the same kind of paid newsletter on a closed platform that takes a revenue share.

What changed in 2026: Ghost shipped automated email sequences for new members (public beta, June 2026), analytics for those sequences (August), automation analytics that show how many members enter welcome flows (October), publisher gift links and gift subscriptions (July and August), dynamic member filters, comment threads with votes and pins, and a 'Optimize your site for AI search' feature (July). Ghost was recognised as a Digital Public Good in spring 2026. Core releases continued on the 6.x line, with v6.69.0 on 7 October 2026 adding self-serve site exports.

It is built for operators who want a paid publication with their own domain, branding and member data, and for technical teams who will self-host. For a film or video business it works as the home for a newsletter, a behind-the-scenes membership, a release-notes or case-study site, or a paid tier for a documentary or course. It is not a video tool, has no generation or editing features, and has no official AI agent or MCP server.

Changelog

What's new in Ghost

  1. Automation analytics for member welcome flows

Shows how many members enter each welcome flow and how far they progress step by step (released 7 Oct 2026 in the changelog).

  2. Ghost v6.69.0 release: self-serve site exports

Core release on 7 Oct 2026 that adds self-serve site exports alongside the automation analytics work.

  3. Analytics for email sequences

Automated sequence emails now report sends, opens and clicks inside the automation canvas (beta, enabled in Admin settings).

  4. Publisher gift links

Publisher gift links give anyone access to paywalled posts (6 Jul).

  5. Email sequences for new members (public beta)

Replaces the single welcome email with a drag-and-drop sequence of send and wait steps for new free and paid members. Ghost(Pro) users get it immediately; self-hosted users need to update.

  6. Recognised as a Digital Public Good

The Digital Public Goods Alliance lists Ghost as a DPG (MIT licence, evaluated March 2026, announced April 2026).

The Verdict

When to reach for it — and when to skip

Reach for it when…

  • Open source with a self-host option, so there is no lock-in
  • 0% platform fee on member payments on Ghost(Pro) paid plans
  • Flat plan pricing by staff and member count, not a percentage of revenue
  • Owns the site, SEO, domain and member list; full API and webhooks

Skip it when…

  • Email sequences and sequence analytics are still in beta and only cover welcome flows
  • No free hosted plan, and Starter has no custom themes or native advanced analytics
  • Self-hosting needs a Node.js server and ongoing updates
  • No official AI agent, MCP server or chat assistant; community MCP servers are unvetted
  • Does not bring its own audience like Substack's discovery network or Kit's recommendation network

Best For

✓ Ideal for

  • A film or documentary team running a paid behind-the-scenes or case-study newsletter on its own domain
  • A freelance editor or DP selling a paid tier of tutorials, LUTs or breakdowns
  • Agencies or production companies that want a branded site, newsletter and member list in one system
  • Technical creators who want to self-host and script publishing through the Admin API

✗ Not built for

  • Creators who want built-in discovery and will not run their own marketing
  • Anyone needing AI video, image or audio generation, editing or an agent workflow
  • Teams without a plan for SEO, traffic and email list growth
Field Notes

Working Tips from Filmmakers Using Ghost

  1. 01 Start on Ghost(Pro) Starter or Publisher unless you need self-hosting; the hosted plan takes away server updates and backups.
  2. 02 Use the Admin API with a staff access token rather than the integration key when a script should act as a named editor.
  3. 03 Keep the welcome sequence in beta in mind: check Labs settings before promising a sequence to a client.
