What makes Gemini different
- 01
Video with synced audio from the same chat box that does research and image editing, no separate tool to switch into
- 02
Omni can use a short existing clip (up to 3 s) as a reference to keep a character or look consistent, and extend a scene from its last 10 seconds
- 03
Video access from the €4.99 AI Plus plan via Flow credits (200 credits), the lowest-priced video entry on Google's own plan ladder
- 04
Deep Research and Google Workspace integration (Gmail, Drive) for script and treatment research
- 05
Developer path on the same family: Gemini API and Google AI Studio with a free tier for text models
About Gemini
Gemini is Google's general assistant: chat, image creation and editing (Nano Banana), Deep Research, Canvas, Gems and Gemini Live. It is the consumer front door to Google's models and is bundled with Google One storage on the paid plans.
What changed in 2026: Google unveiled Gemini Omni Flash at I/O in May, a video model that takes text, image and video inputs and produces clips with synchronized audio (up to 10 seconds at launch). On 27 August 2026 Google released Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash, which adds scene extension in the Gemini app (up to 40 seconds in 10-second steps), first-and-last-frame control, 360p drafts that are cheaper and faster than 720p, and upscaling to 1080p or 4K. Gemini 3.8 Flash followed on 2 September 2026 at $0.75 per million input tokens in the API.
For filmmakers the useful parts are Omni video inside Google Flow and the Gemini app, which pays off for shot extension, start/end-frame moves and quick B-roll, and the Gemini API for pipelines. The consumer plans are cheap compared with dedicated video tools, but the video allowance is metered by Flow credits and clip length is short, so it is a tool for previs, B-roll and fast iteration rather than a full shooting replacement.

When to reach for it — and when to skip
Reach for it when…
- Video with audio from a plan that also covers research, writing and image editing
- Video generation is included from the lowest paid tier (AI Plus), unlike the free plan
- Scene extension and start/end frames make shot continuity easier than single-shot generators
- Large Google Workspace integration for scripts, notes and briefs
Skip it when…
- Clips are short; scene extension is needed for anything over 10 seconds
- Video is metered by Flow credits, so heavy iteration runs out fast on Plus
- No video on the free plan
- Lots of regional and plan-tier variation
- Consumer app has no shot-by-shot storyboard or node workflow for film projects
Best For
✓ Ideal for
- Previs and fast B-roll drafts from a script line
- Extending a good 10-second shot into a longer continuous take
- Research and treatment writing with Deep Research before a shoot
- Quick image edits and reference frames for a video pass
✗ Not built for
- Long-form narrative clips that need a single consistent take over minutes
- Teams that need custom model training or a multi-model hub
Working Tips from Filmmakers Using Gemini
- 01 Draft at 360p, which the Omni 1.1 update says costs a third as much as 720p, and upscale only the keepers
- 02 Use a 2-3 second reference clip to keep a character's wardrobe and look across generations
- 03 Check the Flow credit balance before a session; AI Plus has only 200 credits a month, so budget drafts before finals
