Why it stands out

What makes Ideogram different

  1. 01

Typography is the product: text inside the image is the main claim, and 4.0 coverage stresses small type, multilingual copy and signage over general aesthetics.

  2. 02

Cheapest hosted route to exact-text stills: 4.0 API at $0.03 to $0.10 per image, and a free tier for testing.

  3. 03

Open-weight 4.0 can run on your own hardware and be fine-tuned, which most hosted text-accurate generators do not allow.

  4. 04

4.5 Precise Edit is built for multi-turn edits that keep untouched pixels intact, so you can change one detail of an approved still without re-rolling it.

  5. 05

The developer API also exposes GPT Image, Nano Banana, Topaz upscaling and partner video models (Seedance, MiniMax, Kling) under one Ideogram key.

The Feature

About Ideogram

Ideogram's core claim is still text accuracy. In 2026 the company split its line in two. Ideogram 4.0 (June 3, 2026) is a text-to-image model with downloadable weights under a non-commercial license, native 2K output and improved multilingual and small-type rendering. Ideogram 4.5 (September 2026) is a closed, hosted model built for editing: local changes that leave untouched pixels alone, mask support and up to four reference images, aimed at keeping a still stable across several rounds of edits.

For filmmakers the practical use is the still that carries words: title cards, lower thirds as plates, poster and key-art concepts, festival graphics, document and screen inserts for storyboards, and thumbnails. Video generation is not its strength. The hosted API routes video requests to partner models such as Seedance, MiniMax and Kling rather than a native Ideogram video model.

Pricing moved in 2026. The consumer plans are now Free, Plus, Pro and Team, with priority credits per plan and 4.0 billed at 2, 4 or 6 credits per image depending on tier. The developer API is billed per image, at roughly $0.03 to $0.10 for 4.0.

The Verdict

When to reach for it — and when to skip

Reach for it when…

  • Strong text accuracy, the main reason to pick it over Midjourney or Flux for title and poster work
  • A free tier to test prompts before paying
  • Pay-per-image API, from $0.03 per image on 4.0
  • Open weights for 4.0 give a local option that closed text-accurate tools do not

Skip it when…

  • Video is only offered through partner models in the API; there is no native Ideogram video model
  • Credit costs and plan allowances changed several times in 2026, so budgets drift
  • 4.5 is closed and credit-billed, and an independent rating places it mid-pack

Best For

✓ Ideal for

  • Title cards and text plates that must be spelled exactly, composited over footage in Premiere or DaVinci Resolve
  • Movie poster and key-art concepts with a title treatment
  • Festival, screening and social thumbnails with readable copy
  • Storyboard inserts that need signage, documents, screens or packaging with legible text
  • Changing one detail of an approved still with Precise Edit instead of regenerating it

✗ Not built for

  • Video generation as the main output
  • Teams that plan to self-host 4.0 for paid client work without a commercial license
  • High-volume batch work on a tight budget, where per-image costs add up
Field Notes

Working Tips from Filmmakers Using Ideogram

  1. 01 Generate text-bearing plates here and animate them afterwards; video models often garble letters, so keep words out of the video prompt.
  2. 02 Use the free tier to test layouts, then move scripted batches to the pay-per-image API so cost per image is known up front.
  3. 03 Use 4.5 Precise Edit to change one element of an approved still, so the composition you signed off on stays the same.
  4. 04 For 4.0 stills, export at native 2K and run a separate upscaler only if the final deliverable needs more pixels.
