D-ID
Turn one photo and a script into a talking-head video, or a real-time AI avatar
D-ID animates a single still photo into a speaking video with lip sync and facial movement, from a script or from your own voice. In 2026 it sells V4 Expressive Visual Agents for real-time conversational avatars, plus Agentic Videos that let viewers talk back to a video. Pricing starts at $5.90/mo with a watermark on the entry plans.

What makes D-ID different
- 01
Single-photo specialist: one still image plus a script gives a speaking head with no footage, no actor, and no studio, which HeyGen and Synthesia workflows do not match for a one-off face.
- 02
Real-time streaming API for live avatars (agents you can embed on a site), not only rendered MP4s.
- 03
Price floor: Lite starts at $5.90/mo, well below HeyGen Creator at $29/mo, with the trade-off of a watermark and no HQ presenters on Lite.
- 04
Agentic Videos and V4 Visual Agents add interactive video, which is a different product from a render-and-download avatar tool.
- 05
Output is short by design: 5-minute cap and a stated sync drift after about 45 seconds of footage, so it is a clip tool, not a long-form studio.

About D-ID
D-ID is the specialist for animating one face. Upload a photo (JPEG or PNG, up to 10 MB), add a script or audio, and it returns an MP4 of that face speaking with synced lips and small head and eye movements. It is narrower than HeyGen or Synthesia, which are full avatar studios with large stock libraries, so D-ID fits best when you have a specific face to animate and no camera crew: a historical figure, a brand mascot, a founder who will not film, or a quick explainer.
What changed in 2026 is the product direction. On March 16, 2026 D-ID launched V4 Expressive Visual Agents, a diffusion-based model trained on performances by real actors. The company claims conversational turns under half a second and output up to 4K, and it says V4 is available on all plans. On April 23, 2026 it followed with Agentic Videos, which turn a passive video into a conversational experience driven by the same real-time agents. D-ID also bought simpleshow in September 2025 and now sells into corporate training and explainer production. The site's wording now centres on enterprise digital humans rather than individual creators.
For a film or video workflow, D-ID is a short-clip tool. Its own FAQ says sync quality can drift on long clips, and output is capped at 5 minutes. It works well for a single talking shot, a cutaway presenter, or a historical interview insert, and it is less suited to dialogue between several characters or multi-shot scenes.

Best For
✓ Ideal for

- Founder or expert explainers when the person will not film
- Embedding a real-time avatar agent on a site or product page via the API
✗ Not built for
- Multi-character dialogue scenes or cinematic performance
- Long-form narration over 5 minutes per video
- Teams that need a large stock avatar library and brand kit out of the box
Working Tips from Filmmakers Using D-ID
- 01 Use a sharp, front-facing photo at high resolution; drift and artefacts are worse on angled or low-res faces.
- 02 Keep each clip under about 45 seconds to avoid the sync drift the company itself notes, and cut between takes.
- 03 Budget for the watermark on Lite, or go to Pro for watermark-free 1080p before delivering to a client.
- 04 Check the commercial-use terms on your plan before using the output in paid client work; the public pricing cards do not state them.
