Meshy
Text and image to 3D models with PBR textures, auto-rigging and a 3D agent for game and VFX assets
Meshy generates 3D models from text, a single photo or multiple views, with PBR textures, rigging and a library of animations. In 2026 it added a conversational 3D Agent (beta in June, on the free plan since September), a Meshy 7 / 7.1 image-to-3D line, and print-prep tools. Its output goes to Blender, Unity, ZBrush, Unreal and slicers through plugins and FBX/OBJ/GLB exports.

What makes Meshy different
- 01
Fast turnaround: about one minute per textured model, with a 3D Agent that drives the whole brief from one chat instead of a single prompt box
- 02
Auto-rigging and 600+ motion presets for humanoid and quadruped characters, plus Text to Motion (July 2026) for rigged-character animation from a prompt
- 03
Plugin reach beyond game engines: Blender, Unity, ZBrush, Unreal, Bambu Studio and Creality Print, so one model can go to a render, an engine or a printer
- 04
Developer surface: public API, MCP server and CLI, with per-task credit costs documented in the API changelog
- 05
Commercial rights on paid plans; the free tier is CC BY 4.0 and needs attribution

About Meshy
Meshy is a cloud 3D generator. You prompt it with text or upload an image and get a textured mesh back in roughly a minute. Its model line moved fast in 2026: Meshy 7 arrived in August with Ultra Mode, Meshy 7.1 followed in September with Standard, Ultra 2K and Ultra 4K options (the 2K and 4K tiers need a paid plan), and Smart Topology (July) makes low-poly meshes with part segmentation and an adjustable polygon count. Texturing gained 8K base-colour maps in July.
The bigger change is the 3D Agent. It launched in beta in June 2026 and takes a conversation, a line of text, a photo or a sketch and works through brainstorming, concept images, model generation with 4K textures, inpainting and export. New users start in an approval mode where each action is confirmed. Per-turn credit budgets and a usage panel were added in August. Meshy also announced a nearly $400M Series B at a $1.5B valuation on 21 July 2026 (company press release).
For film work the useful parts are props, creatures, background dressing, rough previz geometry and texture variants of an existing mesh. Meshy is not a substitute for a modeller on hero characters that need facial detail or clean topology. Pricing is credit-based, so budget per model: a text or image model plus texture costs more than the base generation alone. Commercial use requires a paid plan; free outputs are CC BY 4.0.

When to reach for it — and when to skip
Reach for it when…
- Quick turnaround, about one minute per textured model
- Agent-driven workflow lowers the 3D skill needed to get a first model
- Rigging and motion library get a character into an engine fast
- Free tier is usable for testing and CC BY 4.0 outputs
- Broad plugin list for Blender, Unity, ZBrush and print tools
Skip it when…
- Detail on faces and hard surfaces still lags a hand-modelled hero asset
- Credit costs stack: texturing, re-meshing and Ultra modes each draw credits, so a finished model costs several times the base price
- Cloud-only generation; no offline mode
- Commercial rights need a paid plan
Best For
✓ Ideal for
- Previz and background props built from a concept image
- Creature and character blockouts that get rigged and animated in Blender or Unity
- Texture variants of one mesh for a set of props or NPCs
- Batch asset libraries where 20 to 50 items are generated in one pass
- Print-ready prop models using Auto Split and slicer export
✗ Not built for
- Hero characters that need facial close-ups or clean production topology
- Precision CAD or engineering parts
- Real-time interactive generation where a 60-second wait is too slow
Working Tips from Filmmakers Using Meshy
- 01 Use Meshy 7.1 Ultra 4K only on the final pass; start with Standard to keep credit spend low while you iterate on shape
- 02 Generate the base mesh first, then retexture or recolour the same geometry for variants instead of paying for new generations
- 03 Check Meshy-5 retirement (10 Oct 2026) if you have saved workflows or API calls pinned to meshy-5; switch to meshy-6-lite or 7.1
- 04 Run the 3D Agent in approval mode while you learn it, and set a per-turn credit budget so a long chat does not drain the month
